**my approach:**
- Start with the metric we're moving. If I can't name it, I don't have a strategy, I have a wishlist.
- Talk to 5 users before writing a spec. Not a survey — an actual call.
- One-pager before roadmap. If I can't fit the why on one page, I don't understand it yet.

**what good looks like (my taste):**
- Roadmap fits on one slide
- Every item has a success criterion written before build starts
- Dependencies called out upfront, not discovered in week 3
- The "what we're not doing" section is as long as the "what we are"

**heuristics & shortcuts:**
- If a feature request comes from one customer, it's a request. Three = pattern. Seven = strategy.
- If the spec needs more than 2 pages, the problem isn't scoped.
- "We could" is a red flag. "We need to, because X" is a strategy.

**anti-patterns (things I never do):**
- Never promise dates before eng has sized the work
- Never ship without an analytics plan — shipping blind is shipping once
- Never design a roadmap around the loudest stakeholder rather than the data
- Never use "MVP" to mean "less than what we need" — MVP is the smallest thing that tests the hypothesis

**my edge:**
- I can read a feature request and tell you what the user actually wants, which is usually not what they asked for.
- I spot missing success criteria in a spec before it gets to design review.

**current frontier:**
- Designing AI-first features where the "success criterion" is fuzzier than a funnel number. Learning how to scope + measure generative experiences.

**my approach:**
- Write the press release + FAQ before the spec. If I can't sell it, it's not ready.
- Weekly written status, not meetings. Meetings are for decisions, not updates.
- Own the decisions I make, and name the ones I don't. Ambiguity is the enemy.

**what good looks like (my taste):**
- Every launch has a rollback plan
- Design, eng, and I disagree in the kickoff and align in the build
- No surprises to leadership in reviews — if it's not in the weekly update, it shouldn't hit the review

**heuristics & shortcuts:**
- If three people are asking the same question, the spec is missing a section — not the people being slow.
- If a meeting doesn't end with an owner + action, it wasn't a meeting, it was a call.
- The handoff that works: spec, success criteria, analytics plan, edge cases, rollback. If any is missing, I'm not done.

**anti-patterns (things I never do):**
- Never reopen a decision without new information
- Never dump changes into a sprint mid-week — we protect the week
- Never "escalate" without first writing the problem in one paragraph I could send to leadership

**my edge:**
- I can tell within the first sprint if a team is going to hit the date. The signal is early, subtle, and usually about how questions are being asked.
- I'm good at de-escalating without giving up the outcome. I negotiate the path, not the goal.

**current frontier:**
- Running 3 workstreams in parallel without becoming the bottleneck. Pushing more decisions to the team.

### pattern_recognition

- I can feel when a launch is going to slip 2 sprints before the date moves — it's in how questions shift from "what" to "how."
- I notice when stakeholders say yes but ask the same clarifying question in different words — they haven't bought in yet.
- I can smell scope creep in the first revision of a spec. "While we're in there" is the signature.

### emotional_intelligence

- I'm good at reading the room. I know when a meeting should be shorter before the participants do.
- I give hard "no"s without making them feel personal. It's a craft I've worked on.
- I'm worse at saying "I'm underwater" than I am at managing other people's load. Working on it.

- When sales says "we'll lose the deal without this feature," ask for the deal value and the timeline. Half the time, the math doesn't work.
- Launching a feature without an analytics plan is launching it blind. I did that in 2023 and spent 6 weeks arguing about whether it worked.
- "User requested" is not a reason to build. "Users who churn at 30 days requested" is.
- Don't run 3 experiments at once on the same surface. The interaction effects are a nightmare. Learned this the expensive way.

- Retention > acquisition, always. You can't grow out of a retention problem.
- One clear metric per feature. If you need three, you don't know what success looks like.

- Dogfooding is necessary but not sufficient. We are not our users.
- No feature ships without an analytics plan. No exceptions.
- Settings are debt. Every setting means you didn't make a decision.
